about

"Romeo and Juliet" - the all-time classic story of lovers, retold from an original perspective, choreographed by Jean-Christophe Maillot and performed by the excellent ensemble of the Ballet Monte Carlo - on 4th and 5th of May will crown the XXX Bydgoszcz Opera Festival.

Assuming that everyone knows the story of Romeo and Juliet, Jean-Christophe Maillot avoids paraphrasing Shakespeare's literary masterpiece in his choreography. Instead of recreating the rift between the Capulets and Montagues to its tragic resolution, the choreographer rewrites the play from the original perspective. The ballet immerses us deep in the soul of Brother Laurence, whose good intentions ultimately lead to the death of two lovers.

The story of Romeo and Juliet by Jean-Christophe Maillot is told through flashbacks, experienced by a distraught man as he wonders how it all came to a tragic end. The choreographer interprets Romeo and Juliet not as a social conflict or a clan war, governed by a code of honor, but as a story about an accidental tragedy that leads to the death of children more interested in the path of love than hatred.
