Premiera opery Manru w październiku 2006 r., przedtem w bydgoskiej operze niegranej, była symboliczną klamrą zamykającą dokonania artystyczne w jej 50-letniej historii, zwieńczeniem wieloletnich starań o piękny teatr operowy dla Pomorza i Kujaw oraz podziękowaniem dla środowiska muzycznego i społeczeństwa Bydgoszczy. Był to znakomity moment do przypomnienia dzieła stanowiącego uwieńczenie drogi twórczej Paderewskiego i jedynej w jego dorobku kompozytorskim opery.
Muzyka pisana pod wpływem dramatów muzycznych Wagnera zawiera szczególnie imponujące partie symfoniczne orkiestry oraz piękne partie wokalne. Kompozytor włączył do partytury także elementy folklorystyczne: tańce góralskie i motywy cygańskie.
Temat libretta zaczerpnięty został z powieści J.I.Kraszewskiego Chata za wsią.
