The Age of Anxiety - based on W. H. Auden’s poem The Age of Anxiety, in an original interpretation by Rozalia Kierc and Justyna Khil - will be presented as part of the Music Festival at the Blumwe Villa.
It speaks of the ever-present threat of war — both in times of peace and amid bloodshed. It is a theme that remains disturbingly relevant today. Nearly eight decades later, another generation of young artists is experiencing the fear and pain brought about by armed conflict. The trauma in whose shadow we grew up is becoming a very real fear.
The concert programme is divided into three acts, each portraying different experiences of war and mourning.
Act I follows a child growing up in the shadow of war, who later, as a young man, is sent to the army and dies at the front. We then witness his mother’s grief and a funeral seen through the eyes of his beloved.
Act II offers a brief moment of apparent respite and escapism, quickly contrasted with a critique of social indifference and the justification of wartime atrocities in the name of patriotism.
Act III explores the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. The finale returns to the motif of the never-ending cycle of violence and successive victims of war, leaving the audience with a lingering sense of unease despite moments of temporary solace.
Through the use of choreographic elements and visual projections, an intimate and contemporary performance has been created - one that tells a story written by many generations and one that continues to be written to this day.
